PhD position. Technical University Berlin, Germany. Supervisors: Dr Heinz-Detlef Kronfeldt (TUB) and Dr. Emmanuel Rinnert (Ifremer)

This project has two main topics: first, the integration of the SERS (surface enhanced raman spectroscopy) optode to the existing prototype instrument. This requires some adaptation and the update with new laser technology to improve signal quality and reduce power consumption. The second will involve the validation of sensor surfaces developed in WP1 for the marine environment. This will comprise setting up a testing platform for assessment of the different SERS substrates with natural seawater in different environmental conditions such as salinity, temperature or pressure, the identification of interfering parameters and compensation if required. An important subtask is the comparison of the Raman/SERS results with conventional normative measurements achieved by oceanographers. Ultimately there will be sea trials of the developed system.
